Character Names - Generated (Free) Online

by Robin on June 4, 2008

What’s in a name? For main characters, the name can be everything and should be given careful thought by the writer. However, for minor characters like the father of the kid next door, or the main character’s grandfather who speaks with a German accent coming up with a name can often be a minor challenge to a writer.  How about the additional challenges for sci-fi writers having to name planets and characters with weird sounding names like Yiddabawitta?  Add to the name game all the commonplace names like the corporation that just fired your heroine. Help!

You can drop $14.49 at Amazon and purchase The Writer’s Digest Character Naming Source Book, but why do that when you can get the same or better online?  If you need a name quick, gender specific, or innate to a specific region/country there’s are a handful of great web apps you can use for FREE!
